The tomb of Queen Maeve sits high above the town of Sligo, Ireland low mountain of Knocknarea Mountains of the Moon. Legend has it that this good fortune to bring a stone up the mountain to a place on a large mound, but that it's bad luck to remove the stones. This could explain a formidable height.
From the city center, the mountain looks like, but nothing complicated. It looks like another one of these beautiful hills that the north-west of Ireland, so well known. View closer however, and you will notice a bump on the top of this relatively flat hill. Bump This, of course, the tomb of Queen Maeve herself.
In Celtic mythology, Queen Maeve was known as the warrior Queen Connacht unfortunately the queen had the reputation of a very evil that killed his sister Eithne with the intention of harassing her husband Eithne's. Furthermore, it seems, made its way through several husbands, getting rid of each of the murder. In a dispute with her then-husband, King Ailill of whose wealth was more, they were almost equal. However, it was found lacking in only one product. Ailill owned a bull, and brute force by Maeve own can not match. Maeve soon learned about even more impressive bull in Ulster, but was not granted permission to take it. So, she gathered an army and the invasion of Ulster. Its people were expelled from Ulster by Cuchulain, but it was successful in capturing the bull. She brought him home Connacht where he fought and killed the bull Ailill, and then found my way home, in Ulster.
Queen Maeve is the winner in this feat. Nevertheless, previous misdeeds come back to Maeve pursue, above all, the murder of his sister. The son of Eithne sought to place on his wicked aunt and said that he killed her with a slingshot filled with hard cheese.
Her dubious manner led her to be buried in County Sligo, far from the royal capital of Connacht in Roscommon. Many believe that this was an attempt to keep her spirit a safe distance from people she once ruled. In Maeve's tomb believed to be in full royal regalia. She was buried there since the Neolithic.
Knocknarea easily reached by car from the town of Sligo. It is located on Strandhill Peninsula about 4 km from the city. Hill offers parking and information sign outlining the importance of the Neolithic pyramid. Climbing the mountain (approx. 1080 feet) takes about 45 minutes, and you can expect to have met more than a few bleating of sheep in the road. There is not one specific way, so do not forget to wear a good pair of sneakers or trekking boots to navigate the rough terrain at times. Summit Knocknarea is nothing less than fascinating, overlooking the town and surrounding district. However, at this stage of recovery that you will see a small bump on the top of the mountain was not so small Afterall, while at the top of the mound Maeve herself is a sharp 40 meters from this point. Goals visitors Storage stones for good luck, of course, lay down.
