Island Of Ireland

Visit the Aran Islands in Ireland

I love to visit the Aran Islands when I am near the west coast of Ireland. The three islands are Inishmore, Inisheer and Inishmaan. Inishmore is the largest and most popular for tourists. Inisheer and Inishmaan are less developed and also fun to explore.

I have taken day trips to Inishmore and Inisheer. I hope to return soon for an overnight stay at one of the bed and breakfast or guest house choices.

A ferry will take you to the Aran Islands from the pier west of Galway in Rossaveal or from the pier in Doolin. Regular bus trips from Galway take you to Rossaveal. You can even fly to the islands from Connemara Airport west of Galway in Inverin.

You will step back in time when you take a trip to one of the rugged, scenic Aran Islands. You can rent a bicycle, walk or hire a horse-drawn buggy to take you around the islands. Many of the locals speak Gaelic. They are usually happy to have a lively conversation in English, too.

You will enjoy the historic sites and beautiful views as you explore the islands at your leisure. Inishmore is the biggest island at eight miles by two and one-half miles and has more than fifty historic monuments. As you walk or ride the length of the island, you make your way to Dun Aengus, a fort dated from 1500 b.c., which is situated on the edge of a 300-foot cliff. The fort is a series of circular stone walls. When you look over the cliff (carefully) you can see the crashing waves of the Atlantic below. It is a stunning view and a wonderful experience.

When you are on your way to or from Dun Aengus, you will pass by some shops and informational displays. You may also be treated to music by the resident accordion player on the path to the fort. You can purchase a hand-knit Aran sweater to help with the cool weather of the coast.

If you visit Inishmore in the summer, you may be able to see a concert by the traditional Irish music and dance group called Ragus. They play in Kilronan, the port village on the island. Stay long enough to enjoy a meal at one of the local restaurants, such as the Pier House Restaurant, and enjoy lively late-night music at one of the pubs.

I visited the second largest island of Inishmaan with my young children on a day trip by ferry from Doolin. Except for the high waves causing the extreme rocking motion of the ferry, we had a great day.

When we got off the ferry at Inishmaan, we saw some local teens jumping from the pier into the icy waters below for a refreshing swim. You know instantly who the locals are when it comes to swimming in Ireland.

As we made our way off the pier, we felt the effects of the rocking ferry ride. A kind gentleman suggested that we take a buggy ride with him to get some fresh air and start to feel better. We hired him for a tour and he was right! We felt back to normal in a short time. We then hiked around the ruins, took photographs and had a snack at the local pub before taking the (much smoother) ferry ride back to Doolin.

Add a trip to one of the Aran Islands to your Ireland itinerary. You won't be sorry!

Can a child receive Irish citizenship if the British parent was visiting Northern Ireland?
If a woman who is a British citizen gives birth in Northern Ireland while temporarily visiting from her usual residence elsewhere in the UK, can the child receive Irish citizenship? Even if the mother was literally only in Northern Ireland and the island of Ireland for a few days, living in a hotel, and has never actually resided there, and likewise the child has never resided in Ireland? Thanks. Just wondering how someone from the UK wanting a quick way to dual nationality for their child would go about it...

Northern Ireland??????
I was in NI the other day, and I'm not really too bothered about the whole situation in general, majority rules and I'm fine with that but as we drove into Belfast I just couldn't help to think how unnatural all those Union Jacks on the lamp posts were, do they not understand that they are on the island of Ireland or the fact that only 2/3rds of Ulster is in the UK, thus proving that it shouldn't be so and it's just an imaginary line? I'm directing this at the 'extreme' (and maybe not so extreme) loyalists btw, I have friends up there who I know just live there and are happy and honestly I'm 99% fine with NI and the politics but how do they justify it? Q1. How do they justify it? (would be great if someone from there could answer) Q2. If there was a referendum, would you vote yes or no to make it a republic with Ireland? I was always on the fence about Q2 as I know if it was voted yes there would almost certainly be a civil war and I think everyone just wants peace (incl. me) so until it does happen and I have read A LOT of material on the subject I think I'll remain on the fence at the the pros and cons of it, but what would you do? @Rask, well you obviously have no idea what you're talking about

Why does wikipedia refer to Ireland as the "Republic of Ireland" when the name of the State is Ireland?
The name of the State is Ireland not the Republic of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is simply the legal description of the State, as it is a Republic. There is also an entity called "Northern Ireland" which is currently part of the UK. It can't be to differentiate between the two as simply putting Ireland instead of the Republic of Ireland would do that in any case. The island as a whole is also called Ireland, the island of Ireland, but again that doesn't explain why wiki refer to Ireland as the Republic of Ireland. You'd think wiki would be able to get the facts straight at least, lol. I'm an Irish citizen, I live in Ireland and yes, of course Ireland is a Republic - what I am saying is that the correct name for the State is not the Republic of Ireland it is in fact simply Ireland. A resource such as wiki should at least use the correct name. Lol, there is no State called the "Irish Republic", not since 1922. Nope, that site states: Geography of "Ireland", not of the "Republic of Ireland"...it then goes on to mention the "Republic of Ireland" as it is perfectly entitled to do however that site recognises that in the first instance the name of the State is "Ireland". Politically on the island of Ireland there are two States, one is Northern Ireland and the other is Ireland. Ireland is also a Republic hence "Republic of Ireland" but that is not the name of the country. Yes, you can say, and folks do say, Republic of Ireland however that is not actually the correct term to describe the State. Ireland isn't the shortened name of the State. Ireland is the official name of the State when written in English and "Eire" when written in Irish.
