Ireland: Where Crooked Politicians Have to Answer to No One

I'm just an ordinary Joe sixpack' with no journalistic experience and very pissed off with the way this country is being run in generalhence this website.

Up until now Joe had no voice. But now, with the advent of the internet, Joe has a very powerful tool at his disposal. There never was a better opportunity to put enormous pressure on public representatives to attend to the work that they were elected to do.

You see, the way it worked before was like this:

Nice Mr. Politician came around to Joe's house, cap in hand, telling Joe how he was going to look after Joe's interest if and when he got elected.

Of course, when he did get elected, Joe's interests slipped to the bottom of his pocket under the brown envelopes because one of the first phonecalls that he received to congratulate him was from a wealthy developer who was having a bit of trouble getting a bit of land rezoned.

Now Mr. Politician, with the smell of money and power in his nostrils, became a very busy man indeed because he realised that there were other developers who were having a bit of trouble with the planners' and there were other planners' having trouble with the councillors and there were councillors having trouble with their conscience which was soon cured by a brown envelope.

In the heat of all this activity Mr. Politician clean forgot about poor Joe and because poor Joe had no way of making a big enough noise', he continued to be forgotton. There was no room in The Lobby' for Joe.

In other words, Mr Politician once elected, threw all his energies into making money for himself and making sure that he gets re-elected while, in the meantime, all the Joes who elected him had no way of knowing what he was really up to.

One of the surest ways for a politician to get re-electd is to spend the time, when he's not pulling strokes, writing letters on behalf of his constituents pretending that his intervention was instrumental in getting for them that to which they were already entitled to.

A typical example of this farce is Tony Killeen Over 200, 000 letters in a few years. Some of which were to solicit the early release of thugs who should have been locked up for life.

Chasing up your voting franchise investment.

By virtue of the fact that you are reading this, you must already know that your vote means very little unless you can put pressure on your local representatives to focus on the job that they were elected to do.

If you can do this successfully, it will produce at least two benefits. It will mean the politician' won't have too much time to fiddle and, therefore, will have to spend his time attending to local issues. One of the major problems facing our electoral system is the fact that too many business people see politics as a means to further their own scams and, as a result, the system is overloaded with these types. For example it's reckoned that 40% of Fianna Fail TD's are publicans.

In all fairness, what's a greedy publican doing by becoming a public representative? Not alone has he no interest in the welfare of the disadvantaged section of society but, his indescriminate marketing of his products is a major contributary factor to the predicament of some sections at the bottom of the pile. A publican as a public representative, like any other business person, has only one aimto get wealthy and fuck the sick, the poor and the educationally disadvantaged. Electing these guys is tantamount to putting a fox in a chicken coop.

Another example is a real estate agent/auctioneer who ends up, while serving as a councillor, voting to rezone land that he owns himself.

Unfortunately, this system can't be changed because we would be asking these crooks to literally shoot themselves in the foot.

The only effective way to change this stupid system is for the voters to become more discerning when making their choice and, most importantly, staying on the case of their public representative when and if they get elected.

As I said, up until now Joe Sixpack had very little chance of checking into the shenanigans of the person for whom he voted.

But now, Joe has a very powerful tool with which to put pressure on his local and national politiciansthe internet.

Firstly, you have emailEmail your politician and ask him why he is not addressing your problems or the problems of the country in general and if he does not reply, email him again and if, like many of them, he doesn't have a working email address, phone him and ask him when is he going to get one. If appropriate, you can send photos relating to the problems.

Secondly, you can set up a blogging website high-lighting problems in your area and nationwide and send the URL to your politician asking him to comment and to tell you what he proposes to do about the issues.

To set yourself up with a free website in minutes go to Wordpress.com or Blogger.com

The one thing that you can be certain of, is that politicians do not want to have thousands of websites directing criticism in their direction. This website -Eirbiz.com - is getting over 100, 000 hits a month and if you set up a site, I will link to itjust email me.

Of course, you can't beat the good old fashioned method of 20 people turning up at the local politician's clinic and asking some very awkward questions.

Another indication of the lack of interest shown by our present politicians is the fact that very few of them have personal websites.

Today, even the smallest Mickey Mouse' business has their own website.

Is it too much to ask that our politicians also must have their own website before they can get elected?
