A new generation of coaching holidays
by Keith Barrett

The quiet world of coaching holidays has been transformed in recent years. This type of holiday has never been more popular, thanks to some major changes within the coaching holiday industry.

Taking a coach trip to a British coastal resort or over to a European city for a short break always used to be seen as being a cheap option. Tour operators kept prices low, attracting those who were looking for a budget holiday and who were prepared to accept that the quality on offer might not be too high.

Faced with recent changes in the tourism industry, this has been one part of the sector that has been forced to change. Coach holidays have faced an onslaught, with the internet meaning that more and more of us were choosing to book our trips independently, rather than rely on holiday packages.

At the same time, the rise of budget airlines in Europe meant that flight prices dropped dramatically. Suddenly, coaching holidays were being priced out. After all, why should we sit on a coach for 7 or 8 hours when we could fly in a fraction of the time and for a similar price?

Tour operators recognised that they needed to change if they were to survive and maintain market share. Their response has been to increase the quality of their offering and shift towards the luxury end of the travel market.

If you want to take a holiday by coach then you'll notice that the number of destinations available to you has increased substantially. Where once we were limited to travelling within the UK, Ireland and northern Europe, it's now possible to travel much further afield.

Eastern Europe, North America, Asia and Australia are all available as coaching holiday destinations. Similarly, once you arrive at your chosen destination, you'll find that the standard of accommodation used by the tour operators has improved.

With experienced tour guides who are knowledgeable about the locations that you are visiting, coaching holidays are aimed at those who want a stress-free holiday but who are also interested in finding out more about the locations that they are visiting.

This is the new generation of coaching holidays and it has helped to ensure that this style of travel remains popular.
