Life in IRELAND!

I moved from Terre Haute Indiana to Cork Ireland in 1981. I was 8 years old bucause my father got a new job there.

The first trip there was exciting and scary. We were delayed by the air traffic controllers strike (rember that?). However we eventully left to New York ther to London and at last Cork Ireland.

We had to live in an hotel for a month called Jury's because our house was not ready. After we moved in our house I met many children and made friends quickly. We lived on a high hill with fields to exlore.

When Setember came around it was time for school. I was in third class and the school was called Saint Luke. I had to take Irish as a laungage. However very few speak it. I had to wear a gray swearer, grey pants, a red shirt and a red and grey tie. I had to work about a mile to school at the bottom of the hill.

Durring the year I played soccer (football to the Irish), hurling (an old Irsh game sort of hockey) and cricket. When I lived over there they had just 2 channels RTE1 and RTE2 it didn't come on until 4 o'clock P.M!

On the week ends my family and I went traveling the Island. Our house was 30 minutes from the ocean. We went to many beaches for walks, play game or picnics just not in the water-too cold. Ireland has very high tides so sometimes the beaches would have tide pools and people would put on boots they call them wellies and dig for mussels. Most beaches were very rocky only few are sandy. Since it is always windy in Ireland sometimes there will be inches of foam on the beach. No matter where you are in Ireland, you can hear the call of the beach birds.

My family loved to visit castles. Most castles in Ireland are in ruins that are open to the public. Blarney castle was not far from Cork City and been there many times. The big thing to do at this castle is to kiss the Blarney stone. You go to the top of the castle, hang upside down and lower your head to kiss the stone.

In 1987 my family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. Ireland was an adventure that I will never forget. I have a web site and below and I will be appreciate it if you take a look.
