Uncovering The Most Famous Racecourses Of Ireland
With some of the best breeders, jockeys and racecourses in the world, Ireland has a world-famous reputation for horse racing. A trip to Ireland provides the perfect opportunity to relax with fellow racing-lovers and enjoy some of the best race courses Ireland has to offer.
The Galway Races is one of the most famous horse-racing festivals in Ireland, and has a strong reputation within the horse racing community across the world. There are three festivals held annually at the Galway Races - lasting 7 days in July, 4 days in August and 2 days in October - which take place at Galway Racecourse, Ballybrit in Ireland. The festival held in July is one of the few seven day meetings in the world.
Although the event attracts large numbers from across Ireland and around the world, the event also has a strong reputation with Galway locals. In fact, it is common for many local businesses to close early during the summer events to allow their staff to relax and celebrate the festivities of the races.
Although not as famous as the Galway Racecourse, the Leopardstown Racecourse hosts several major horse-racing events every year. The course is located just a few miles from the centre of Dublin and like many Irish courses hosts both National Hunt and flat horse racing throughout the season.
Another one of the most famous and most popular races to attend is the Irish Champion Stakes. A flat race, the Irish Champion Stakes takes place annually in September; since it is part of the World Series of Racing it manages to attract a large international audience every year.
Located in County Meath, Fairyhouse Racecourse is one of Ireland's most famous horse racing destinations. An important part of Irish culture since the later 1800s, Fairyhouse Racecourse is home to the Irish Grand National and is also the birthplace of the Irish Grand National Steeplechase.
County Kildare is internationally recognised as the most famous Irish county when it comes to horse breeding. Throughout the county, stud farms and training centres dot the landscape and it is little surprise that one of Ireland's most famous racecourses is located here.
Naas Racecourse hosts around fifteen different racemeetings every year and is renowned for the exceptional hospitality it offers. What's more, live bands, summer BBQs and family days out are all typical here at the Naas racecourse. Thanks to its accessibility from Dublin, Naas has become particularly popular with UK racing lovers - taking one of the many Irish ferries that sail is a common way to get across to enjoy a day's racing.
Although much newer than many of the Irish racecourses, Navan Racecourse is still a very popular and highly-esteemed racecourse within the racing community. Starting in 1920, Navan racecourse is famous for its jump racing and popular annual events. Iconic names like Moscow Flyer and Brave Inca have all raced here, quickly establishing Navan as one of Ireland's best.
Whether it's an afternoon in Navan or a weeklong event in Galway, Ireland offers some of the most popular racecourses in the world for the racing enthusiast to celebrate at.
