Things to Do in Killyleagh Northern Ireland

Nestled among the rolling hills of County Down in Northern Ireland, lies the small town of Killyleagh. With a colourful past and genuine pride in its heritage, the town boasts some important and interesting moments in history. Although small in size, Killyleagh is an ideal location for a holiday or an overnight stay for families or couples alike.

One of the main reasons why Killyleagh is a popular holiday destination is because it is in a county that is abundant with activities and things to do. Sailing, trekking, fishing and golf are to name but a few of the many things that Killyleagh and its surrounding areas have to offer. Sailing is popular with many visitors and the town has three sailing clubs alone, not to mention others which are scattered along the coast of Strangford Lough. It is also hard not to take advantage of the beautiful countryside which Killyleagh is surrounded by. For those who enjoy a good walk, there are plenty of country lanes to walk which are filled with a wonderful collection of wildlife including badgers, red squirrels, kingfishers and more recently a resurge in the magnificent Buzzards. For the more serious walkers and hill trekkers there is the Mountains of Mourne which offer breathtaking scenery and a peaceful and relaxing environment.

Delamont Country Park is a great place to visit for the whole family, especially if you have young children in your company. Visitors can book boat trips out on to Strangford Lough and with the opportunity to maybe catch a glimpse of a seal, or if you're even luckier, a basking shark, it proves to be a big hit with all visitors. The park has a Thomas the tank engine and carriages and even travels through a tunnel where it sounds its horn, this is a brilliant experience for the little ones. Delamont Country Park is also home to the Strangford Stone, the tallest megalith in the British Isles at 10 metres high. It has a significant purpose in Delamont as it was raised in 1999 by 1000 young people from all over Northern Ireland to mark the beginning of the millennium. With other activities such as an outdoor gym, canoe trails and numerous walks Delamont Park is a fun and exciting experience for anyone of any age.

As the saying goes, good things come in small packages and for Killyleagh this is true. With beautiful surroundings, ancient castles, buildings and action packed attractions, Killyleagh is definitely a place not to be missed out on.
