What Would A.T. Stewart Do? Insights Into The "Death" Of Ebay
Have you ever wondered if you could haggled for a price in order to get it lower? Before 1846, this was the trend. However, a unique individual named A.T. Stewart immigrated from Ireland to the United States. He set up a department store in New York known as the Marble Dry Goods Palace. Here is where he set the payment pattern that we follow today. What is it?
It's the method of price tags. Stewart put unique price tags on individual items in order to make the shopping process a lot easier. People just had to pick up an apple, see the tag that says "5 cents" and accept it. This pattern eventually attracted the attention of the other department stores like Sears, Gimbels, and J.C. Penney. This pattern has stuck with us for the last 150 years. But what if we took a different method? That's where Ebay comes in. We've all heard of Ebay, and the services like it that attract customers and sell products for what the customer wants to pay. That may involve being less, or more than what the retailer bought it for. But this flexibility in pay is a fascinating conundrum. It involves competition, novelty, and a desire to beat all others. But in the last 2 years, Ebay has been losing power as a source of Ecommerce. Why? Wired Magazine had an article asking this exact question calledGoing, Going, Gone: Who killed the Internet Auction? Originally written by James Suriowiecki, a writer for The New Yorker. This article explores the history, implications, and elements of the online bidding powerhouse Ebay in great detail. Originally, the founder of Ebay thought that Ebay was going to change the very nature of business online, and reintroduce Haggling into the equation of online commerce. however, 10 years of bidding and "Sniping" has caused the attraction to the service to wear off: Really, though, the biggest factor in the decline of the auction may simply be that the novelty of bidding wore off. "The Internet stopped being a source of wonder and became a place to do certain kinds of business, " Koehn says. "Once that happens, you start to think about things like 'Does it make sense to spend this much time on an auction when I might not even get the item in the end?'" In econospeak, thehedonic benefits of bidding on eBay diminished. While this effect was less than the founder expected, it's reverberations are still felt today in all corners of ecommerce. On top of all this, even as auctions themselves have become less important, the bargain-hunting, reinvent-the-market ethos of the auction has turned out to be more important than ever. Sites likeGroupon, LivingSocial, Gilt Groupe, and eBay's own StubHub are all companies that, in a broad sense, are built on the concepts that made eBay so successful: the flexibility of prices, the importance of network effects, the value of empowered consumers. The Ebay.com phenomenon changed the flexibility of the economic model. Prices are what people demand that they be. But we aren't escaping the model yet. It will take far more to get out of this 150 year rut that we've put ourself in.
