What do people think to the opening to this story?
I've had this story in my head for 6 years but now that i've sat down to write it, I can't seem to write a decent beginning to start it off! Help! It's set in the early 1800s (my main character jack is 23 and his sister is 16) It was the worst day of his life. It was raining, windy and cold, just like any other day for everyone else, but for him today was different, today he stood by his parent's grave watching helplessly as they were laid to rest. His little sister stood beside him, shaking, he put his arm around her to steady her balance, and to comfort her, apart from an Aunt he had only met once as a small boy, he was all this little girl had left. He had to protect her. Only when they returned to their small cottage and were away from the prying eyes of friends and neighbours did Marianne allow herself to cry. Jack re-read the letter he had received a day earlier from his Aunt, she wanted them both to come back to Dublin to live with her. Jack hated charity and accepting help from others but he knew he had no choice, they could not afford to keep the cottage on just his wages. A week later they left for Dublin. They stood outside their Aunt Joan's house, they both felt uneasy, their mother had always spoken kindly of their Aunt but Jack was too young to remember, he did not know what to expect. They were dragged from their own thoughts when the front door opened and Aunt Joan stood in the doorway beaming at them, she ushered them inside and made a complete fuss over them, she was just like their mother, in both looks and manner, she was short and plump and had short curly brown hair, her face was kind. Jack knew everything would be fine. The next day Marianne stayed with her Aunt to help with the housework and to try and get to know her better, Meanwhile Jack decided to take a walk around the village, he hated to be idle, he knew a few people in the village as he had grown up with them in Dublin city before his parents moved to the countryside. He went to see if he could find some of his friends, it did not take him long to find Adrian, he had been Jack's best friend since early childhood, When he saw him now, Adrian was busy chopping wood in a field, he was covered in dirt, and he looked tired. Jack went over to him and waited silently for him to look up. "Well, would you look who it is! Jack Anderson, You haven't changed a bit mate. Your Aunt mentioned that you and Marianne were coming back" Jack shook his offered hand, "I had no reason to stay where I was, and Marianne is in need of a motherly figure, I'm no help with girls things, How is your wife?" Jack enquired, Adrian had married his childhood sweetheart Vanessa four years ago and had twin daughter's two and a half years ago, Jack had not seen them since their christening and he felt guilty now as he was named their godfather. Adrian laughed "She's expecting again, I'll be a father again come June, and the girls are in great form, come over and see them Vanessa will be delighted to see you again." Adrian started to make his way to the cottage on the far side of the field, Jack followed. That's all i've got written down so far what do you all think of it as a beginning? Honest opinions please I know everything to do with the time period from researching books newspapers and from talking to other people, Jack is his name, its not a variation of anything for this story he's just jack, and adrian has been stuck in my head since day one for some reason ha ha, I know everything to do with Dublin life in those days, I am a Dubliner born and bred after all and i've read enough historical novels etc to know how things should be, I already have the story planned out and scenes with other characters, where they live and jobs they have the troubles they get into regarding money etc I just need a good opening, I am well prepared for this story after 6 years of having it in my head

First page of my story... is it good?
Quinn McKenna woke up, the sun streaming onto her face from the window. Today, funnily enough, the sun was shining over Dublin city giving it a hazy glow on that early morning in May. Quinn's top floor flat overlooked the whole city and on that morning at 6:30am there was almost a deathly silence over the place when she opened the bedroom window. She walked into the lounge and up the two steps that led to the kitchen area that overlooked the lounge. She turned on the radio to hear Louise Duffy at Today FM. Making herself a coffee, Quinn stared out the kitchen window and thought about how far she had come in just 3 years. From living in the isolated countryside of Mayo to the city of Dublin, working as the most exclusive interior designer in the city. How was it? What can I improve on? Quinn is an unusual girls name yes, but I researched it and it is a Celtic name.
