Two Countries That Appear To Be Culturally Diverse Are The Republic Of Ireland And The United Arab Emirates (UAE)
Roman Catholics comprise almost 95% of the population of the republic of Ireland and religion governs life and culture to quite a large extent. Amid the Celtic Tiger boom, a cultural tradition of delayed gratification born of necessity was replaced by a culture of consuming. Business practices and relationships in Ireland exist both at the individual and company level, however building lasting and trusting relationships is very important in Ireland and can be crucial for business success.
The UAE's constitution declares that Islam is the official religion of all seven of the constituent emirates of the federal union. The UAE holds nearly 10 percent of the total world supply of proven crude oil reserves and the fifth-largest natural gas reserves. The UAE economic development has been evolving in parallel with cultural and political reforms that have enabled a rapid development while at the same time maintaining UAE's traditional cultural principles. Both countries have a diverse cultural, religious, social and economic platform. Therefore the business practices are going to vary between Ireland and United Arab Emirates, and the differing cultures affect the costs of doing business in each economy.Republic of Ireland Ireland , a member of the European Union is known as the `Emerald Isle'. Ireland consists of historic cities and is known for its legendary hospitality. Most of Ireland's population lives in cities, where urbanization has lent a very cosmopolitan feel to the social environment. (Refer to Appendix 1). Ireland's essentially Celtic culture has remained largely intact despite foreign influences of the Vikings, the Normans, and of the British in more recent days. (Eurodesk 2010). Ever since St Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland, in the fifth century, the country has been Catholic- and staunchly so. Roman Catholics comprise almost 95% of the population of Ireland; Protestants form a miniscule 3.5%. Religion governs life and culture to quite an extent in Ireland, and has seen virtually none of the communal strife that has ripped apart Northern Ireland in the 20th century; the main reason for this is that the Protestants are too small a minority to form a cohesive group of any stature. (Eurodesk 2010). The Irish cultural industrial sector has a highly skilled technological pool. Within this high technology grouping, the most active sectors currently are life sciences, medical and information technology sectors. Many of the world's leading companies have subsidiaries in Ireland which perform very successfully in comparison to those based in other EU countries. ( Eurodesk 2010). How Irish cultural differences influence the cost of doing business Historically, Irish cultural attitudes toward wealth were conflicted. Common people called those who sought wealth, rather than accept their God-given station in life the "lace curtain Irish." The Irish business people who obtained wealth found themselves frequently viewed not with admiration, but with the corrosive mixture of suspicion and envy that the Irish called "begrudgery." (Lynch 2010). Between 2002 and 2007, Irish banks tripled their consumer and business lending to $498 billion. Four-fifths of the borrowing by individuals was for the swollen mortgages needed to cover the ever-increasing price of property. Through credit card debt, the balance Irish card holders were carrying on their cards increased by 98% in just five years. The Irish were now much richer than they had ever been. The inflation-adjusted average income was roughly triple the 1984 figure. (The Economist, 2010). By Kosta Barkoukis - Konstantinos Barkoukis is a global business IT consultant.
