Cruagh Wood
Location: Cruagh Wood is about 8 km south of Rathfarnham on R115 to Glencree. Pass Hell Fire Club on right and take first turn left. Travel along this road for 1.6 km, car park on right. It can be found on discovery map number 50, grid reference O-128 226.
Facilities: Car park, forest walks and access to Tibradden Mountain.
Length of Trail: Walks of about 6 km are available.
Habitat: There are views of Dublin City from the car park and a beautiful wood of mature Japanese larch stands nearby.
Main Tree Species: Sitka spruce and lodgepole pine can be seen at different stages of development. There are some fine old mature beech and European larch near the public road.
Other Flora: Luzula, heather and bilberry.
Fauna: Sika deer, foxes, rabbits, hares, stoats and badgers are regularly sighted. Grouse is also present here.
History: In 1184 Prince John granted Cruagh to the Sea of Dublin. The area was once known as 'Harold's Country' hence 'Harold's Cross'.
Geology: Cruagh mountain stands 522m above sea level between Glendoo and Killakee mountains. The main rock formation is granite.
The Parish of Cruagh - The parish of Cruagh in the seventeenth century appears as containing the town-lands of Killakee, Jamestown, Cruagh, Woodtown, and Tibradden, besides land described as mountain.
