Easy And Excellent Edible Christmas Gifts

This holiday season, the only stores benefiting from my wallet will be the local supermarkets. You see, I will be giving homemade edible presents to all of my family members and close friends this Christmas. Due to unemployment, salary reductions and insurance bills, I, like many other Americans, am on a budget, big time! But tightening the purse strings doesn't necessarily mean that I have to stop gift giving all together, it just means that I need to be a little more creative. So, here are some fantastic edible Christmas gift ideas:

Breads
Homemade breads and muffins make for fabulous holiday gifts. The internet is teeming with easy and economical bread recipes. This year I'm going to bake batches of yummy chocolate chip banana bread made with peanut butter. Other easy bread options include: zucchini, strawberry, applesauce, cranberry, blueberry, plum, Irish soda bread and so much more. You can even whip up loaves of foccaccia, rye, wheat, French and sourdough breads with or without a bread machine. And many of the recipes I've come across yield two loaves so you can produce multiple edible gifts at one time. You may also consider baking scrumptious muffins like these: banana nut, blueberry, chocolate chip, blackberry, etc. Package your muffins in wicker baskets and wrap your bread loaves in plastic and then a festive Christmas towel or napkin. Tie each end with fabric ribbon for a tasty, homespun edible Christmas gift.

Barks
Chocolate candy barks are so simple to make and only require a few key ingredients. Purchase a bag of white chocolate melts at a local craft or grocery store as well as a bag of peppermint candies or candy canes. Melt the chocolate in the microwave, crush the canes, mix together and spread onto waxed paper. Place your bark in the freezer for an hour or so and then break it into medium sized pieces. You can also employ the same method with milk or semi-sweet chocolate melting chips. Package your homemade bark in clear glass or plastic jars decorated with holiday ribbons, a silk poinsettia flower or red raffia.

Trail Mixes
Trail mixes are effortless to prepare and can be made ahead of time for a delicious edible holiday gift. Consider using M&Ms, raisins, morsels and salted peanuts for your mix or dried fruits, sunflower seeds and cashews. You can also incorporate pretzel sticks, chex mix, cereals and more. A combination of pretzels, nuts and raisins drizzled with melted white chocolate also makes a tasty treat. Package your homemade trail mixes in clear glass jars. Cut fabric squares from Christmas napkins and attach to the tops of your jars with ribbon for a truly festive look.
