Hidden Gems Of Ireland: Longford
In the midlands, there is a county, not often considered by the traditional tourist, as you will not find much about in the tourist books. But if you truly want to travel - take a drive away from the regular spots. Explore a little more. Walk along the quiet lanes of Longford, discover the hidden gems, the friendly people. Visit the local shows that are usually ongoing during the summer. See something different, meet different people. The small communities therein thrive on organizing special events, and your sure to see something to make you stop and stare.
For example - Abbeylara, a little village with the ruins of an old abbey, on the 2nd Sunday in June for the past three years have been running a Tractor pulling contest. Yes, you read right - a Tractor pulling contest. They feature a parade of old tractors - greenhouse effects aside, and try to involve everyone and provide entertainment for all ages. There is even a feature you don't see every day - a Goat and Cart ride, for the small children. A local family bring their entourage of goats for children to pet and learn about, and have a stand selling the milk, some Goat Chocolate, Fudge, soaps and of course rides on the cart. Not something you see everyday. True for some people Longford is not the first choice for tourism, but there are several small lakes, full of pike for the fishing enthusiast, there are several traditional pubs along the main roads and of course the back villages. A day in the bog - is a must - though watch for the midges - the Irish version of mosquito as the twilight sets in they are sure to eye you as a tasty treat. For the golfing enthusiast - there is an excellent golf club, well worth a visit. Viewmount house provides a fantastic meal as well as high quality lodging, oozing with history that is just asking for the tale to be told. Lanesboro is another brilliant part of Longford boarding Roscommon and Loch Ree - yep as in the song - where the three counties meet - Longford, Westmeath and Roscommon. Lanesboro is right on the River Shannon and again - take advantage - of the boats there, and hire one out to go cruising up the river or down the river! Don't bypass Longford - stop awhile and explore! You will be back for more! By Bridget Sullivan -Best Photos near County Dublin, Ireland - Incl Dublin River On New Year's Ev
