Studying Abroad In Cork, Ireland

Oh Cork, Ireland...where the grass is emerald green and the Irish-American family ties run rampant.

I studied abroad in Cork, Ireland from September to December of 2007. I came to the decision to study in Ireland by way of my Irish/German ancestry and interest in Irish History (I'm a history major).

Cork, Ireland in County Cork was amazing and full of history. What was cool about the experience was that history constantly surrounded you and it was not weird to see a thousand year old castle along a highway or back road.

The people of Cork were always friendly and extremely interested in my ancestry since many Irish people have distant American family members. I found one of my family members in Blarney, near Blarney castle. And, if you are worried that you may not find a family member, don't worry the Irish citizens will even go so far as to take you out to where that family lives so you then can introduce yourself to them!

Surprisingly enough, it did not rain that much when I was there, but when it did it was a light drizzle. It became cold in December when I left.

I studied at University College Cork while I was there, and was surprised by the education there since I never hear about Irish education. I was expecting the courses to be easier. However, they were difficult to balance since I was used to a more personalized approach for help in my classes (I went to a private college). I took an Irish History course, Chinese History, English, Finance course, and Spanish language course. The Spanish course was difficult since it was Spain Spanish and not Mexican Spanish (the dialect is different). Furthermore, I had a difficult time picking up on the Irish accent for a few weeks since I was not used to it. The Irish pronounce certain words differently or they use different terms to describe certain things. To get back to the school, my grades consisted of exams and papers. They were few and far between so you have to make sure that you know your stuff before you go into an exam.

Overall, the university was top notch and the night life was amazing. There were more pubs to go to than you have time for and lots of clubs for those that love to dance or are looking to meet someone.

Don't forget to check out Dublin and Belfast they are unique in their own way. You will understand what I mean when you get there or just do some more research on the Web.

By John Williams - I have a lot of good general life experiences that I believe can help you out.

Why do most homosexual men have camp accents often accompanied by the 'gay lisp'? Is the gay scene to blame?
I'm not looking for people to be smart with me by saying 'how do you know most of the homosexual community?'. I'm also not looking for people to tell me that not all homosexuals have these characteristics. These things are obvious. I currently live in Cork, Ireland, and approximately 90 per cent of the gay community who I know have these characteristics. However, these people are 'scene queens' as one might say: they are the gay community that one sees in the gay bar every weekend. The other ten percent of the gay community I know who are not camp, etc, do not attend the gay bar often, and do not consider themselves as 'scene queens'. Is it possible that gay bars, the gay scene, etc. is making gay people act more camp, etc. No smart answers please. I have only reported facts to the best of my ability. I am also not biased whatsoever. I am gay and bear no grudges for any other gay men. @kumorifox: I do not know many people from Cork as I am new to the city. It could be possible that I only became friendly with the camper individuals! However, I have been to a good few gay bars in Ireland, and I notice that the 'regulars' to each bar always happen to be the camp ones. I am talking about Chamber's and Ruby's. @Bow before the rainbow shitting Nyan Cat!: I said 90% of the people I know! Some people can't read.
