A Wild Western Man Experiences New York City For The First Time
Arrival in New York City
Through a set of circumstances and coincidences I found myself moving a Royal car, circa 1880 or so, from an estate in Ger in Southern France and reinstalling it in a mansion owned by an Irish Nobleman on Upper East 73 rd and 5 th Avenue in New York City.
I am from the far Western US and had never been to New York City, let alone to Europe and I was suitably impressed and awe stricken to say the least. In France I had time to get the job done and little else, but in New York I had time to explore and I was delighted with what I found and learned.
To me, New York is the capital of the world. It is the new Rome, as in, the capital of the Roman Empire. I used to think, as I walked its incredible streets, that everywhere in the world, every day, people thought, spoke, or read something about New York. This was years before 911, but when that tragedy took place I think everyone in the world felt it in their hearts. New York is part of everyone in the world somehow and I found myself in the very heart of it literally, plucked out of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado one day and deposited smack dab in the middle of its booming hustle and bustle the next.
I was met at the airport in Newark by a tall, dignified gentleman in a tweed suit holding a sign with my last name on it. He looked like Sean Connery's twin brother and spoke with a beautiful, refined brogue, Irish though, rather than Scots. He asked me, "Are you him?" I said I was. He picked up my carry on and escorted me to the baggage carousel where we we retrieved my trunk. "The car's just outside." We walked together through the rotunda to the outside where a dark blue Cadillac stretch Limo was waiting. He opened the trunk, carefully placed my baggage inside and moved to the back passenger door and opened it for me.
I was surrounded by black leather, gilded handles, buttons here and there, a skylight above me, air conditioning ducts and dials, and a glass shield mounted on the back of the seat in front of me. Suddenly, I heard a disembodied voice with a dignified Irish accent address me, "May I call you Michael?" "What? Sure. Are you talking in a microphone or something?" "Yes. You can just speak naturally and I can hear you. My name is Sean." "Sure I thought. What else could he be called." "I'll be taking you to the Master's house, but you don't start work until tomorrow. Would you like a tour of Manhattan?" I thought, "Master? Who the Hell is that? The guy I'll be working for?" I piped up, "Sure, that would be great." He asked me if I had ever been to NYC before and I told him I had not. "Well then. This is going to be a treat for you. I'll give you the Grand Tour, " and we were off.
