Special Photographic Features or Notes
Whilst the bay covers a vast area, this guide is intended to highlight access to the immediate North area of Killiney's beach and the amenities available. The North of the beach is the more dificult beach to gain access to, visiting the site early in the day or late in the evening is most advisable as parking along the R119 coastal road is limited. Those that are not fortunate enough to find parking along the stretch of road shown below will most likely benefit from parking further along the road in both directions in either Dalkey or Killiney townships.

From the map above you can see cars parked along the R119 coastal road (known as Vico Road locally). Whilst the road is narrow in places there are designated car parking spaces with ready access to various pathways that all lead to the same area of the beach. The path on the left is a steeper gradient whist the two on the right are more relaxed. However, it should be noted that all paths cross over a railway bridge and descend a steep concrete stairway before finally reaching the beach. Those with limited mobility or large amounts of equipment may prefer to access the beach from the South aspect where parking is more readily available and does not require a significant descent to the beach. Please note there are public toilets available at the start of the paths to the right of the map, opening times are undetermined.

| Mossy rocks, Killiney Bay |
This area of the beach has been a popular bathing area since the Victorian era and one can see many examples of historic installments. Large rocky outcrops are abundant and make great subject matter for photographers. Rocks covered in vivid green moss, crystal clear rockpools, shale and sand give the photographer a pallette of foreground whilst the ocean, beach, sweeping bay and rugged mountains offer a rich variety of mid ground and background.
Night Photography

| Night exposure at Killiney Bay beach |
Low light photography is my speciality and for this location I would thoroughly recommend taking a headtorch. The location is along a rural coast road and the path and beach are unlit.
With any night photography caution should be exercised in terms of personal safety, let someone know where you intend to be and what time you are expected back. The beach is remote and often vacant in the evenings and at night. Mobile phones are likely to have limited coverage due to the steep rocky cliffs.
Light pollution emanates from the townships of Killiney and Bray to the South, it is advisable to photograph North, North West or West.
Special Equipment
Coastal seascape photographers would benefit from wide angle lensesNature photographers would benefit from telescopic lenses to catch sea birds
Graduated filters if you use them
Lens cloth due to prevalent coastal conditions
Tripod if required
Head torch if required
Suitable footwear for accessing the beach
Best Time of The Day
The beach predominantly faces South West with the best views to the South. This makes the location ideal for sunrises although good photographs could be achieved at any time of the day.Tidal Information
Regardless of tide there are plenty of photo opportunities in this area. Unfortunately there is no reliable source of tide times for this area and with any coastal exploration one should exercise caution and always ensure that there is a clear route of retreat.Wind Information
Strong winds from the West will likely cause a high tide and a good deal of spray whilst strong winds from the South may cause some sand disturbance.Getting there

Alternatively the Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) system is a light transit rail system that makes stops at both Dalkey and Killiney (see map for stations). The DART can be boarded in Dublin to the North and Bray to the South as well as many other stops between.
