Introduction

Sunrise looking towards Roches Point
Church Bay is a small beach that is located near the mouth of Cork Harbour, a quick drive South East of the popular yachting town of Crosshaven. Like many beaches in this area along Corks South East coast, it is a mixture of large to small pebbles and finer sand during low tides. Looking out from the beach your view is split between Roches Point and the eastern horizon.
Special Photographic Features or Notes
Access to this beach is straight forward, after parking on the wide road (marked in red) its just a short walk down to the beach. Though expect it to be busier on weekends and especially Sundays.![]() |
Google Maps
The beach features interesting formations of rocks which can be used to create interesting compositions and they have a wide variety of textures and colours. The tidal movement has arranged the pebbles in size and during low tides finer sand and pebbles are visible. This beach is East facing so is the perfect spot for sunrises but the evening light just before sunset is also good if your unable to get up early.

Evening Light and View of Cliff Outcrop
It is possible to follow the cliff path and emerge on the outcropping rock (mark as red circle), This provides good views of the Bay, cliffs and fields behind it.
This beach is very different at high and low tide. Personally I prefer the low tides. During low tide the smaller rocks are visible and the beach is less cramped. During high tides the waves get a lot closer to the larger sections of rock making for interesting long-exposures. The southern(lower) end of the beach features much higher slabs of rock that project into the deeper water.

Sunrise and view of Roches Point Light House
Night Photography
This beach is unlit so a torch is recommended for night or early morning trips. The views out to Roches Point and the Horizon will have little light pollution apart from Roches Point Light House itself.
Special Equipment
Coastal seascape photographers would benefit from wide angle lenses
Nature photographers would benefit from telescopic lenses to catch sea birds, Roches Point Light House and distant coast line.
Graduated filters if you use them
Lens cloth due to prevalent coastal conditions
Tripod if required
Head torch if required
Suitable footwear for accessing the beach and cliff path
Best Time of The Day
The beach is East facing. This makes the location perfect for sunrises although good photographs could be achieved at any time of the day.
Tidal Information
Regardless of tide there are plenty of photo opportunities in this area. Tidal information for Cork is available here
Wind Information
Strong winds from the East will likely cause a high tide and a good deal of spray, but the Bay is reasonably well sheltered by its cliffs.
Getting there
The R612 from Carrigaline to Crosshaven is one of the most direct routes. Then passing through Crosshaven and taking the 3rd exit at the roundabout and following the road to Church Bay.Irish traffic signs and way markers are notoriously bad compared to other European countries and people visiting from outside of Cork should plan ahead or use a GPS navigator.
Biking through Co. Cork?
I will be traveling to and staying in Cork for a few days this coming March and my bike will be my main mode of transportation. I can ride 10 miles (16 km) at a nice, leisurely pace in about an hour. I want to ride to Kinsale, Blarney, and Cobh from where I will be staying in Cork. The distance is definitely doable on Google maps, but what is the path really like? :P i.e. what kind of terrain and roads, where are bikes not allowed that the maps aren't showing me, is it going to be a rough ride all uphill in one direction? You know: it looks nice on paper, but that's probably not the case in the real world.

We want to return to Ireland (Co Cork) but need some help first. Can you help?
We need to budget our money (both here and when we emigrate) meticulously. I used to have some of the info that I'm asking for but it is now out of date and I can't remember from where I got the info originally. So I'm asking you lot!
All the following is based on a cohabiting couple.
1 - At what point of gross income does tax begin to be paid at the lower level and the higher level? Is there a point beneath which no tax is paid like here in England?
2 - At what point of gross income is PRSI paid and what percentage is it?
3 - At what point do you cease to be eligible for a medical card?
4 - If someone is in rented accommodation and is on low-income/minimum wage can any rent allowance be claimed?
5 - And, just in case things don't go to plan, what is the lower rate of unemployment benefit that can be claimed by a cohabiting couple?
6 - I beleve the tax rules for writers, artists and musicians has changed but by how much? Do U2 now have to pay the full 40 odd percent tax and if so how the heck did Ireland get caught up in the recession? LOL!
Tommy2
Well I didn't know that. And do they still live in Ireland? The country they profess to love?
